Florida Population Trend Line Graph

This line graph shows us the trend of the population in Florida from the years 1850-2020. Here we are able to clearly see the severe increase of population in the Miami-Dade County, with a large spike starting in the year 1880, and continuing to present day.

Florida Population Chart by County

The chart above shows us the entire population count of all counties in the state of Florida starting from the year 1790, up until 2020; with data not starting until 1850.

Maps Showing Population Distribution

1930

This map shows us the population count of Florida in the year 1930, which is the year in which every county has available data on their population. We can see that the darkest areas on the map are the areas with the most amount of population, and lightest are the areas with the least. This shows us that there seems to be a slight pattern of residents in wanting to stay on the coast of Florida, besides the residents staying in Winter Haven, as this area is more towards the center.

2020

When we compare this map of population count from the year 2020, to the map from 1930, we see there's an increase of population on the eastern side of Florida, and a decrease of population on the western coast of Florida.

Answering Geographic Questions

In the process of GS4, I learned that a majority of Florida’s population growth from the 1800’s-1900’s, stemmed from the important role they played in the battle with German Submarines in World War II. Specifically, Miami-Dade County, due to the location being on the southern coast of Florida. I read that this event led Miami’s population to increase by almost half a million. So, while creating these charts and maps, I wanted to see to what extent did Miami’s population really grow. I was able to see this the clearest when I created my “Florida Population Trend Line Graph” that not only shows me to what extent Miami’s population increased, but also how low the population initially started. That info was available to me prior, when I created my initial table, but being able to visually see how much that county’s population grew, and at such an extreme rate, shows me that the growth spurt in population at this time, most likely stemmed from the events of World War II.
